The mission of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) is to advance scholarly publishing and communication, and the professional development of its members through education, collaboration, and networking. SSP established The Scholarly Kitchen blog in February 2008 to keep SSP members and interested parties aware of new developments in publishing.

The Bundestag has waved through two reforms of copyright. In addition to dealing with orphaned and out-of-print works, it is about a secondary publishing right for authors, which does not taste the publishers and the stock exchange club. In concrete terms, the indispensable secondary use right for tax-financed scientific authors decided by the Bundestag means: Publishers can no longer transfer exclusive rights of use to authors who research at public universities.

Open Educational Resources (OER) - teaching, learning and research materials that their owners make free for others to use, revise and share - offer a powerful means of expanding the reach and effectiveness of worldwide education. The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and UNESCO co-organised the World OER Congress in 2012 in Paris.
